A really impressive piece of carp tackle

I thought it would be interesting to ask what item of tackle you have purchased recently that has really impressed you.

So I will start the ball rolling with ‘The Spomb’.

Every once in a while you stumble across an item of tackle that you know is going to become a regular part of your armoury and you are often left wondering how on earth you managed without it before!

Well, I have just stumbled across one such piece of kit – The Spomb.

First impression and I was picking fault without actually using it – aren’t we all a little guilty of this at times? First time I did use it I had nothing but praise for the thing.

So what is a Spomb?

Basically it is a spod, shaped like a bomb which spills absolutely no bait in flight.

I have been using it for baiting up with boilies and no matter how I cast the Spomb and how I let it hit the water I have had a 100% release rate. It doesn’t seem to matter if you crash the Spomb in nose down or gently tap it on the surface sideways (casting to a clip) the ingenious release mechanism releases every time.

The Spomb will comfortably deliver 45 x 15mm or 100 x 10mm boilies each cast. One thing which really surprised me once I started to use the Spomb is just how easy it is to retrieve.

Hi Shaun

The Spomb impressed me a lot I must admit. Have yet to get out on a venue to put it through it’s paces but everyone that I have spoken to that has one, praises it highly.

There is a lot of bits that have impressed me over the past year, but the bits that stand out to me are;

PB Products Sinking & Tungsten Rig Tubing – Both are totally smooth inside unlike some other tubings which mean that they are so easy to thread, even with damp line, that once used, all other tubing becomes obsolete.

PB Products Shield leader line – The sheer abrasion resistance of this leader material has to be seen to be fully taken in. Ronny De Groot demonstrated it to us and even after running a sharp edge along it multiple times causing the material to fray up like anything, we still could not break it! When tied to the mainline with an Albright Knot, the finished knot is tiny compared to comparable diameter fluorocarbon. It also has no memory so comes off the spool on the cast straight.

Free Spirit Mini Rock Solid Ruck Sack – I have never been one for rucksacks due to having a back spine, but I am converted back to them again after using one of these. No need to take a separate chair on day sessions due to the frame supporting up to 16 stone (I am nowhere near that!!!) and the padded top making it more comfortable. Absolutely Tardis like capacity that swallows everything I need for a session, with room to spare.

Finally (and I have to put it down), Quest Pop-Ups. Not many off the shelf pop-ups that can be used with Chod rigs and still remain buoyant enough to hold the rig up still after 48 hours in the water.

I love the Free Spirit Rock Solid Framed Rucksacks too. I use them whilst bivvy fishing because of the obvious table top they give.

Must admit I tend to use the Rigid Carryall for my day fishing as I like the fact that I can see everything without needing to rummage for things.

Hi guys, the spomb looks very interesting!!
For me it’s the free spirit tree house brolly and bivvy. Quite why you don’t see many of these I don’t know, lack of marketing I guess. Since I’ve had mine I’ve had three friends buy one, I’m thinking of getting another just so that I never miss out if production ever stops!!

Hi all though i am very happy with the spombs casting and operation. I am disappointed as a bought two spombs for my self and my brother and all though they work well both broke before the end of or first session.

Got the spomb looked at it and thought what a good idea. When first used it was as it said on the box – no fall out, wonderful! But after a hour of use it did not always open when brought back in. Also as it says to open brand side up, after many casts the label fell off. Also its a shame it’s not bigger so you can get more bait in as can only use one side. Would I buy another one? I dont think so as it don’t look like it could last a season

Just got back from France where we used the spomb for the first time,it exceeded all expectations,casts suberbly,and the distance was incredible,teamed up with a 13ft rocketeer spod rod,10lb line with tapered leader distances of 170yds plus were acheived.On a couple of occasions it failed to open,which i think was due purely to it not landing on the button,but over the course of a week so what?The retreive was effortless once you got it up on the surface,much easier than a conventional spod.
Bait load was fine too,as well as two big handfuls of particle,we were putting out up to 18 20mm boilies at a time.After a weeks fishing the spomb is as good as new,so what john and his brother done too theirs to break them i dont know.Top marks from me,and its good to see something original and practical on the carp fishing scene for once.

We are enjoying reading these comments and sorry to hear John and his brother broke a Spomb. These were extensively tested and Mr Spomb tried to break one for about 6 months. Fishing at exteme ranges and even casting into fields, rushes, pads, islands, up trees – total abuse. This testing was done before we were happy to put them out on the market. We are continuing to work to improve this new product to ensure best value for all customers. It is essential we improve on any problems to see what has gone wrong and caused the damage. If returned to the supplier and the product is found faulty it will be replaced and improvements made to prevent this happening. Happy Spombing everyone!

Purchased 1 from carpin on this year and was a bit optimistic. Used it this weekend and it is BRILLIANT will never use a spod again really good idea 10/10 would reccomend it to anyone .

I got Mark Hutchinson to put one through it’s paces whilst we did the Free Spirit casting demo’s at the Brentwood show last week-end. No-one who saw him launch them 200 odd yards with the cheapest Free Spirit Spod rod could fail to have been amazed.

Their stable flight was incredible and bearing in mind he was crashing them down onto a hard sun dried grass field speaks highly for their robust construction. Yes a couple of nose buttons broke in the end but many casts were made and the Spombs then wound back the same distance bouncing across the hard ground.

The more I see of these the more impressed I am.

Little footnote here. The Spombs are now available in a buoyant version too – same size but a little lighter in weight. I can see them becoming standard kit in my approach this year and soon we will be wondering how we got on before without them.

looks good on paper i bought one used it. load of c..p chucked a spomb half full of pellet. it came back braken the wings which is to stop it breaking snapped i wouldnt recomend it to anyone who has £15 to waist. the people who thought of this need to go back to the drawing board. please please dont buy one

The fins never broke on the ones Mark was launching 200 yards across the field at Brentwood and they were crashing into the ground rather than water. From my observations of the Spomb through repeated personal use as well as during the demo’s at Brentwood Barry’s Spomb has to be a one off. Surely the damage if any should be at the nose end rather than the tail end as the tail end follows the nose end…

This superb and ingenius device will help you catch more fish. by simply allowing more precise baiting and greater distance casting, you can now have the chance to fish the bigger waters
no need for a bait boat your spomb can place as much bait as you like over an area you choose.
once you have masterd the spomb, this wont take long at all remember practice makes perfect.
I have been lucky enough to part of the team spomb since i first met brian and as you can see from some of the pictures i have placed on the facebook and my website, they just keep getting bigger.
most of our fishing baiting up is or has been done by boat for many years now.
catfish still appreciate the noise of the boat, but the carp have wised up to this and the spomb has now definatly enabled us to catch bigger and better fish
including my new pb wild common of 52.04lbs plus many 40+ commons.
To add to this list.
so many 30+ fish we sometimes dont have time to take a picture when they are feeding with such tightly baited areas with the spomb these fish keep you busy.
All i can say is spomb on if your not on the spomb your missing out on a fantastic opoutunity to turn your fishing world upside down.
