Hi Chris,
Out of respect for the other anglers that i know fish this area regulary it wouldn't be fair of me to name the area we were fishing.

I have fished this area on and off for many years and as i mentioned in my 'wanderering about barbel' article, some years it holds hardly any barbel and other years it holds lots.

It pays to familiarise yourself with a few different stretches on different rivers as they are never excactly the same from one season to another (on the bigger rivers anyway). This way you should be able to get some good sport in most seasons.

          Cheers,
                    Pat

Very special fish that everyone should try and get the experience of catching. They are certainly the fastest moving fish I have hooked here in the U.K.

Apart from fishing the River Tay in Scotland for a couple of years on the trot all of my Salmon fishing has been done on the cheap. A lot seem to think Salmon fishing costs a lot of money. Well, it can but there are still plenty of areas you can fish for them relatively cheaply.

I remember one lunch time deciding on the spur of the moment over a pint with a mate to shoot over to The Welsh Dee (from Nottingham) to Llangollen to see if we could get a day ticket. Never fished it before and my second cast caught me my first Welsh Dee fish!

Seem to remember we simply went in a general store and asked if there was any fishing to be had - they sold us the tickets there and then. Anyone knowing me will know I wouldn't have spent much money for a couple of hours fishing. LOL

Thats quite some record mate !

Only ever fished for Salmon once myself. I was invited has a guest by my late mate Gordon Grace, we fished a syndicate water on the Wye and i was fortunate to catch one. This was only a fish of about 6 1/2 lbs but it was the only fish of the day between 8 anglers, so i counted myself as very lucky.

That was quite a day in cracking surroundings and seeing the salmon 'run' when the tide came through is something i will always remember.

Cheers,
             Pat

That's really interesting Pat. One of the things I am quite proud of is catching Salmon from 9 different rivers in the U.K.

They are certainly creeping back into more rivers again. In fact whilst still at Walkers we had a customer who decided to try and catch a Trent Salmon and caught one almost straight away! For what it is worth I foul hooked ne during February whilst carp fishing - I lost it unfortunately but came back with what was definately a salmon scale on the hook.

With the late season weather wise this is the time of the year you are likely to have seen a fish pushing as far up as possible.

I remember fishing the River Teign a few years back and Bill Parker who I was fishing with caught a fish with a transmitter attached. He returned it to the address supplied and we found that it was a River Dart fish fish which had been hanging around the Teign estuary before making its way back to the Dart, swimming up the Dart for a bit before coming back to the Teign and up the Teign which proves they don't always end up back in their original rivers.

Salmon get spotted on the river Derwent near us but it is definately not known for its Salmon. Again whilst at the shop we used to get quite a few Salmon reports but a lot of it goes un-published due to small club fears they may be outpriced on the rent asked once some of the land owners realise it could be a viable proposition fishing for Salmon.
