Hi

Over the years I had caught quite a few fish using artificial corn and maize, fished over particles. The other year during a discussion with Shaun on artificial baits, he told me of his successes on a much larger variety of artificial baits and in particular the Boilies.
I have since had some great results both here and abroad using a snowman type setup of a 15mm Rahja spice boilie and 10mm fluoro artificial bait on top

Hi there
Since Shaun showed me this technique I have used it to great success in France.
I think over the last 12 months I have hardly cast out without a plastic pop up only rig. It has accounted for loads of carp. The most notable for me was on Maurepaire when I placed all rods on the far margin with Rahja Spice and a yellow artificial bait, and all rods went. Best fish went over 35lb!

Have to admit I'd never used plastic up until about 2 years ago - never had the confidence before.... but now I rarely cast out a boilie without a smaller plastic boilie on top of it. And I reckon my catch-rate has improved because of it. I usually use a 15mm boilie with 10mm plastic boilie on top of it fished snowman style.

Why has it improved my catch rate? Well I think it now gives me more confidence, and we all know that confidence plays a big part in fishing - if you're happy with your hookbait you'll leave it out there a bit longer & fish well. Conversely if you've got no confidence your hookbait is doing the business you'll reel in after a couple of hours - even if you know the presentation & location is spot on.

In my mind it gives me more confidence because;

.. it gives extra visual attraction,
.. a little buoyancy to the hookbait
.... and you know it'll always be on, even if nuisance fish might be whittling away the real boilie.

In short - I can't think of a reason not to use one!

Not sure I could go the final step & use a plastic on its own without a real boilie (although I've fished alongside someone who did exactly that... fake maize above a bed of real maize & caught really well). But who knows - I might get there eventually!
