I’m going to have to get down and dirty with you on this Top Tip. As anglers we come into contact with water every time we fish. Water is the very place that many pathogens (those nasty germs that cause diseases) are at their happiest, just waiting for their next victim to contaminate. Yet it amazes me how careless and sloppy most anglers are when it comes to hygiene while they’re fishing. It’s a case of ‘it will never happen to me’ type scenario. Think so? Think again.

Every now and then you find a bit of kit that makes life so much easier that you wonder how you ever managed without it.

If you use a lot of PVA in your fishing then I think you’re going to like this little product. What I call the ’mega towel’ made by a company called Tiemco in Japan. continue reading…

On the 30th June Phil Parker put the following question to the bloggers:

OK here goes. Now I’m sure this subject has been touched before.

Why do we not have venues in the UK similar to those advertised in Angling Lines?

In fact perhaps I should ask them this and other companies this. There seems to be a couple venues that do this but not many.

I am not knocking France or any of the lakes over there as I have fished many of them over the years and love the places I have been to. Its just that there seems to be missing opportunities which I’m sure could be grabbed.

I know there are places like White Acres and Anglers Paradise, again top notch venues but the chance to share a lake with friends on an exclusivity basis or a 20 acre lake shared between a maximum of 10 anglers has surely got to appeal. T

here must be plenty of anglers who would relish this as syndicate waters are sometimes far and few between and not within budget for many. So come on everbody lets have your thoughts, suggestions and opinions on this.

I hate spod spill! – all those bits of spod mix flying out of the top of the spod when you cast it out, leaving a trail of bait short of the marker float and right where your lines will be when you cast your rigs out. Watch the Korda Underwater videos and one thing comes across loud and clear – if carp feed over line (or leadcore / tubing) and pick this up with their lips when they feed they spook straight away, putting other fish on guard and drastically reducing your chance of a take. continue reading…

Whenever I cast out any rig I want to be confident it doesn’t tangle and that when it settles on the bottom the hook isn’t masked by any weed or bottom debris. I almost always mask the hook with either PVA tape or PVA foam or both. Trapping the hair at the same time definitely also prevents tangles. In the photo you can see two set ups that I use for 90% of my fishing..

I use the Extra Wide 20mm PVA tape from Kryston and PVA foam nuggets from Solar Tackle. I would be totally lost without these products, both of which melt completely and never leave any residue at all.

In the first picture the rig above is a simple single bottom bait. In this case the hook is masked with a few turns of extra wide PVA tape which has been licked a bit to make it neat and compact – as you can see the hair is trapped at the same time. This is also a good set up for distance fishing.

31lbs PB commonIf I were to ask you to come up with the ‘ultimate’ test for a new carp bait – like Shaun’s Liver B8 – what would it look like?

Maybe you would fish that bait on one rod alongside your other baits and compare your captures? Maybe you could compare your results with other anglers using other brands of boilies on the lakes you fish? Maybe you could fish it on a lake that had never seen that particular bait and see what your catch rate was like.

All well and good but what about the ultimate test? continue reading…
