Answer:
Hi Malcolm,
I have fished the Trent in various area’s from Rugeley to Swarkestone and have taken barbel from all of them. Some
area’s have produced and still do only produce the odd fish while others produce consistently over a few seasons. The fish on the upper Trent do seem to be very nomadic. An example of this is a guy we knew who took in the region of 20 doubles from one stretch (up to a massive and genuine 17lb +) in one season. The same guy fished the same stretch the following season (2 or 3 times a week) and never caught a double.
From Milton Keynes the travelling would be in the region of 70 to 80 miles for most of the Upper Trent. For this I would suggest joining Burton Mutual Angling Club. They have in the region of 10 miles of the river with several different stretches all of which offer the chance of good fish with plenty of doubles to be caught. The advantage of the Burton Mutual is that you can fish at night (this really is the best time on the Trent) and because they have so much water none of it is ever really crowded. It is only £60 per season (plus £30 joining fee) and it offers a host of other venues. There are other area’s on the Tidal Trent such has Collingham weir (Newark) which regularly produce big barbel but do tend to attract the crowds. This would be about 100 miles from Milton Keynes. The Barbel society also have water on the Trent. Put Trent barbel into Google and you will see there are loads of different places.
As I said earlier I would highly recommend the B.M.A.A. because of the vast amount of water and the fact that there are no time restrictions. You won’t catch loads of barbel, but those that you do catch will be of a good average size (8lb +) and will be totally wild fish.
Best wishes Pat Gillett
