I couldn't agree more, I know that in the army matches the more experienced guys are always helping out those that are new to the sport, in every aspect not just fish care.

Also while I'm here well done Andy on a top result this year look out at the inter-corps though as Dogs is back.

Nice thought that one Andy and I believe the magazines could do much more in covering carp welfare. However I must admit to thinking that many newcomers to the sport are that eager to get looking at rigs, baits and tackle that a lot of them wouldn’t concern themselves too much with the well being of the fish they catch – to begin with.
Perhaps a bit of a rash statement that one but based upon 25 years working at Walkers of Trowell helping customers get started in carp fishing I only ever had one customer who actually asked me the correct procedure once a fish was landed. Never did I get asked how to pick fish up, how to carry them back to the water or anything else.
Fortunately having a strong conscience I would make a point of running through the basics before I took any money off the customer. I do know this is very rarely going to happen in other shops. There simply isn’t the time if there are only a couple of staff to help out other customers waiting to be served.
One thing which really gets up my nose and something I have witnessed far too many times in the past is when experienced anglers are stood a few swims away from a newcomer and stand there criticising the way they are handling their fish between them. Now in my mind the experienced anglers are at much greater fault than the newcomer who probably doesn’t know any different and until someone shows him/her then an awful lot of fish can end up being put through far more stress than they really should.
Elie hit the nail on the head on this one – take some time out to politely show the angler the better/proper way of doing things. Certainly I have always found a one to one – face to face approach to be the best way of teaching anyone anything and you will usually find the newcomer to be most grateful for the advice.
Personally I would like to see information sheets and codes of conduct issued with all first time Rod Licence purchases. Similarly make these sheets available to order on line or by telephone.

Yes, nice piece Paul. I would just like to add a comment about having a bucket of water available. Personally I fill the bucket when I catch a fish. The water left standing in a bucket can become much cooler or indeed much warmer than the water the carp has just been landed from. This can cause the fish immense stress if you pour a different temperature of water on them.

Nice to see you using the two part fish treatment. Just started to use it myself and must say I am most impressed with it.

Basically for those who have not seen the products they come in two parts. One cleans the wound and the other seals the wound. You can purchase them from www.aceofkoi.com

Nice piece Paul, really well put together.

I couldn't agree more about the importance of basic fish care. Another thing worth thinking about is to suggest some fish care tips to anglers on the bank and show them what you mean. If you do it in a non-patronising way you'll be surprised how positively people respond. Others might get offended but if they're doing something badly it's up to us to say something.

One aspect many anglers struggle with is how to hold a fish up for a picture - I've demonstrated to a few anglers over the years how to do this when I've seen them struggle and the advice has been very welcome.

Keep up the good work and well done on the Island week.

Some very sensible advice there Paul, in todays world and with the wealth of knowledge we have gained on fish care. There are no excuses for misstreating the carp we cherish so much.

However there are always new anglers and youngsters getting involved. So to that end we have to keep reminding people, and there is no better way than the use of blogs like this, websites, and magazines.

Well done Paul.
