Romuald BAYON:

As a child, I would follow my father every time he went tracking pikes by boat on French lake or when he went fishing roaches with live bait that smelt so lovely that it made you feel like tasting them. Being at the water’s edge makes me feel good and have a huge breath of air long ago.

Then came that famous day on the river bank where we had settled for carp. There was a dazzling, start, a magnificent fight. This moment will be engraved in my memory for ever and that was the first of countless nights spent tracking Dame Carp on the water’s bank. I started on little brooks with superb fighting common carp, and then went on angling on great lakes with the lake of SALAGOU, PANNECIERE in France.

I am still looking forward to spending time at the water’s edge. Learning new techniques again and again, living new fishing situations. I am very proud of bringing my contribution to Quest BAITS and being next to great anglers such as Mr. Shaun HARRISON and the whole team. I am addicted to Rahja spice and Special crab, which have brought me many fish over the year.

When you open a bag of Chilli Chocolate the first thing that hits you is the powerful chocolate aroma… but the clever thing about it is the subtle chilli & pepper taste. It surprises many people to learn that carp adore a spicy flavor.  It’s true that the fruity sweet flavours do well too… who can doubt the effectiveness of Fruity trifle… but baits like Rahja spice prove without doubt that they have a like for the spices too!

My first sessions proved conclusively the effectiveness of the Chilli Chocolate.  I also received the combination hooker to me bait set.  It comprises  pots of 15 & 10mm glugged hook baits & pop-ups.  Extremely practical!

See you soon at the waters edge!

After visiting a few fisheries for day sessions over the last few weeks, with the occasional fish caught, I am now on the shores of a lake within walking distance of my home for a short session of 24 hours without pre-baiting. It’s early in the morning that I arrive at an arm of the lake that I like because I know it’s where the fish like to get together before spawning.

My early season bait has been Rahja Spice because it is really spicy & I know that carp love the spice without fishmeal, particularly in these cold water conditions.

I put my rods in the boat and rowed my baits out to 2.5m of water near the dead wood on the opposite shore.  Bait was 20mm boilies above a bed of hempseed with boilies cut into pieces – a great mix that I like very much early in the year.

Everything is in place and it is in the afternoon that my first run occurs. A nice mirror with nice round belly and a yellow tinge – very nice! Before nightfall I have 2 more great fish of the same caliber.

That evening I baited up again and the next day a festival with a lot of runs!  The carp are on the move and I am in the right spot.  I fish until 7pm then retire exhausted.  What a great day!

See you soon at the edge of the water…

This year in France we have had a really very hard winter.  For several months the temperatures were below zero with northerly winds.  We were paralyzed and most of the lakes were frozen.

What a relief it was to get out on the bank again and it was a beautiful sunny day with no wind that my first fish of the year were caught.  It was a short day session and I’d done no pre-baiting.  I used a mixture of hemp, sweetcorn and Quest Fruity Trifle boilies.  Whenever I open a packet of Fruity Trifle that sublime fruity smell reminds me of my early days in carp fishing… back to basics!

It took less than an hour for the first take coming from the boat bay exposed to the sun. The run was slow & deliberate but the fight was anything but!  What fun… the first fish of 2010 taken under a radiant sun.  He just couldn’t resist the Fruity Trifle!
See you soon,  Romu.
