I've used the wadingmethod loads of times in the past and to great effect. It's amazing what you can learn from it, like Shaun says depressions, firm spots, soft spots and even small patches of weed can go undiscovered with a marker.

I have mainly used it on harder waters where you want to be certain that absoluteley everything is spot on, as you may only get one chance all year. Placing the bait by hand gives you superb confidence on places like that.

Can't emphasise enough though about the landing net handle or long storm stick for support. I even use it to make a little trough to bury my leader. Which is even more important on rig shy waters.

Nice piece again Paul.

Nice piece Paul, really well put together.

I couldn't agree more about the importance of basic fish care. Another thing worth thinking about is to suggest some fish care tips to anglers on the bank and show them what you mean. If you do it in a non-patronising way you'll be surprised how positively people respond. Others might get offended but if they're doing something badly it's up to us to say something.

One aspect many anglers struggle with is how to hold a fish up for a picture - I've demonstrated to a few anglers over the years how to do this when I've seen them struggle and the advice has been very welcome.

Keep up the good work and well done on the Island week.

Best fishes

Some very sensible advice there Paul, in todays world and with the wealth of knowledge we have gained on fish care. There are no excuses for misstreating the carp we cherish so much.

However there are always new anglers and youngsters getting involved. So to that end we have to keep reminding people, and there is no better way than the use of blogs like this, websites, and magazines.

Well done Paul.

Fanstastic Linda!

Great piece, really enjoyed the story. I am always amazed at just how instant these baits are. As Shaun said, get everything else right and the carp will do the rest.

Best

Excellent post Linda. Proof that we don't need long periods on the bank to catch carp. A positive frame of mind and total confidence in bait , rigs and location and anything is possible.

Hi Jamie,
We were lucky whilst we were there, the crays and the chats were totally inactive. As i mentioned a couple of the runs came to baits that had been in 36 hours. This would not have been possible if either had been active. Although it does seem that this season the chats have not been a problem. I have seen the chats 'ball' up as you describe, on other French waters.

Island Lake is a cracking venue and because of the size of water to fish stocks ratio is somewhat of a rarity amongst French Lakes. Definately a place i woul go back to.

Cheers,
           Pat

Cracking result Pat, well done mate.

Island lake is a true Carpers water, I would recommend it to any experienced angler.

Did you see many Crays or the tiny Poisson Chat (whilst I was there the other year they appeared like a small floating bed of weed that would then suddenly disperse before coming back to the schoal).

Cheers

What an experience Gareth.

I have been and looked at the Orient whilst on a trip to Maurepaire and it is one hell of a daunting water, so any fish from there is a result in my book even if it was only 5lb.
I keep saying I will have a crack at it one day so who knows.

Cheers

As Jamie says. A cracking fish Roy and a lovely story.

Big lesson here which we all invariably learn the hard way - Set up the net first and take it down last. I have slipped up a couple of times like this and playing a good fish isn't the ideal time for setting a net up. It does add to the excitement though :-)
