French Boat Licence

Hi Shaun

Just a quick question about the use of boats on French waterways, and that is do you need a licence for them? I have a sport yak with electric engine!!

Good question and one I was not sure about so did a Google search for you and came up with this http://provence.angloinfo.com/countries/france/boatlic.asp

One of the opening lines is ‘Permits are not required for sailing boats, or boats with a motor less powerful than 4.5 Kilowatts (6CV) sailing sea or inland waters.’

Haven’t read all the way through but I’m sure what you need to know will be in there.

Hi Robert, Shaun is right the limit is 4.5 kw or 6CV. I CV is the equivilant of just over 1HP. Its unlikely that your electric outboard would give you much over 1HP so you will be fine.

HELLO, you only need boat permit if it specifies like on chante ,
but most of the carte de peche lakes and rivers you do not ,
just check you can use a boat as on some public lakes you can,not ,
rivers you can use petrol engines i use a 4hp mariner 4stroke ,
but wen ive been on the river lot and moved south abit to salagou its back to electric again , hope this helps .
