The morning hill walk I do with Brook the Carp Dog each day is now becoming much more pleasant weather wise and the tell tale signs of warmer things to come are making an appearance. The snow drops have been out for a while now and the willows are starting to bud. The Daffodil’s are also starting to burst into flower but more important in my mind than any of these are the Frogs have returned en-masse to my garden pool.
Past years have shown that as soon as the frogs re-appear after their semi dormant hibernation period the
carp in the lakes seem to start to once again become much more active which in turn brings the need on to feed much heavier than they have been doing.
Although we still have cold frosty weather to come the water temperatures have usually lifted above the critical point by now and combined with the oh so important longer daylight hours which I am sure is the main driving force which brings the sleeping winter world back to life the carp are going to be very catchable for a while until their natural survival and human avoiding instincts kick back in again.
Make the most of this time of the year before the masses appear back on the banks. The carp will still be sporting their magnificent winter colours and should be at their absolute peak fitness weights.
Choose your bait wisely and feed sparingly and you could soon be watching a new PB slip into the net.
My bait choice at the moment would be one of either of the following Quest Baits. All have outstanding cold water catching history…
Chilli Chocolate, Rahja Spice, Fruity Trifle or the soon to be released Ghurkka Spice. Put one on the hair then peel the skin leaving it intact where the hair enters and exits to give yourself a special cold water edge.
