Elie Replied.....

Hi Ryan,

I have always catapulted the groundbait out in balls as I have mostly used it at short to medium range. Using it this way the groundbait balls usually explode when they hit the water surface and cloud the water, rather than sinking in one round lump. I want it to spread like this rather than land in bigger lumps. If I wanted to I could make the mix much drier and denser before catapulting it out or even using it as a method mix - that's the beauty of this method - you can even make it much sloppier and use it as a spod mix.

So to respond to your question directly, I would be happy to drop this mix off as it is with a scoop. But as your are fishing in such deep water that is so close in, I would want more of the groundbait to reach the bottom where my hookbait is rather than cloud the water and create a column of bait up from the bottom to the surface. I think it would be better in your situation to bind the groundbait first by squeezing a handful of it together before dropping it in. It doesn't need to be in balls as you are not using a catapult. I'd vary the size of lumps I'm throwing in and spread them about.

Give it a go, it will definitely be better than just using corn on its own.

Tight lines

Do you have to make balls with this stuff, or can you just scoop it out there? I am fishing from a pier in about 25 ft of water. I usually just throw out a can of corn and bait up the hair rig with the same. I want to try this out. I was palnning on just making the stuff, and scooping it out to where i drop the line. Does the ball effect help it to sink?

Hi Jordan,

Definitely start off everywhere with the methods you know well. Big carp eat the same as smaller carp, you obviously have a very effective method - stick with it. The only thing I would consider changing when fishing for possible larger fish is the hook and line which may need to be increased depending on how snaggy the waters are.

Best fishes

Hi Kev

We are really blessed over here in the UK and in Northern Europe with the amount and variety of bait available to us. But as you seem to have discovered for yourself, you don't necessarily need fishing tackle companies to supply everything you need. There are so many things carp love to eat available elsewhere, especially in the pet trade. I spent several years fishing for river carp on the Trent and pre-baiting was essential. The cheapest and most effective bulk groundbait I used was Vitalin - basically dry meaty dog 'muesli' with maize flakes. You can buy kilos of the stuff for just a few pounds and it binds brilliantly. I would still use it if I needed to bulk feed; then start introducing more and more boilies (or whatever I was going to use as a hookbait) the nearer I got to actually fishing.

Who knows - maybe one day there will be a Quest Baits USA subsidiary company?

fantastic method indeed.
Ive come up with my own recipes of my own here in the USA, I find that not having the mix available to me over here can be a problem, But after 3 years of trying afew different recipes Ive finely found one that is cheap and easy to make.

I do wish company's like quest could find away of cheapy shipping baits over to the US.

Thanks for a great write up

Excellent piece Elie. You hit the nail right on the head when you commented upon most anglers taking the easy option when baiting. A few matching boilies and sometimes a few pellets and or hemp and that is usually as adventurous as most get.

I am a very big believer in offering both a variety of colours and sizes and often flavours whilst baiting. I very much like the soup effect given by groundbait methods. Lots of visual stimulation but not a lot for them to actually eat.
