Hook Link Breaking Strain?

Hello I have recently started coarse fishing, the venue which I am currently fishing looks very much like a match fishing venue , although the fish are somewhat larger then match fishing size(2-15Ib), the main fish there are carp. My Question is what type and breaking strength of hook-link should I use, the water is slightly clear but in some-parts very muddy, and has around 5-7 feet of depth in some areas.

The rules of the venue have a ban of the use of braid and other heavy lines like lead-core and surface fishing. My mainline is 10lb filament line and i am mainly waggler fishing using maggots or sweetcorn on a hair-rig, with a simple rod and reel set-up.

Any advice much appreciated

Hi Matt,

A difficult one to answer without knowing much about the venue in the way of snags and weed present. If the water is relatively snag free then you will be able to drop quite low with your hook link and get away with a lighter reel line too which will make casting and tackle control a little easier. Hope this helps.

6lb main line should be ample really on the float so long as there isn’t lots of weed and snags in evidence. Hook link wise start off slightly lighter than your main line and see how it goes.

If the venue is closely pegged you may need to step back up to avoid fish tearing through every one elses swim. As I said – very difficult to answer without knowing the venue. Hope this helps in some way.
