Hi guys I've just ordered some 30 lb Dyneema braid from ebay. 500yards for 16 quid. The great thing about it is that it changes colour every ten metres and there are five colours. Not sure about the quality yet but if its ok it will make great marker braid. I'll let you know

Thanks for picking some of the braid up for me Shaun. I have been out and about with the marker today and am more than happy with the results. It certainly speeds up the process of mapping out a swim. Nice to see just how far you are chucking too.
The only problem is if you let Jason get his hands on it and he casts the braid off the spool.

Cheers

Hi Elie,

So far so good - not had an issue yet. I spoke to Les Watts yesterday (via British Carp Study Group forum) who came up with the method and he is still using his original two spools he loaded when he first tried the method. Says he has to re-do the marks a couple of times a season as they fade but as he says once you have taken your time doing the first lot then it is a simple case to re-colour them whilst out on the bank.

He did say he has lost a few feet off the end over the years through having to cut the odd frayed bits off.

I always use a flouro carbon leader on my marker set ups so this shouldn't be such an issue for me - i'll lose the odd inch when re-tying leaders.

My previous braided marker line was also from the Dynon stable and was the incredibly fine MCT. This did indeed chuch the odd knot out but its casting capabilities were enormous so I lived with this simply re-tying it back together when I had a mess up I couldn't undo. Having knots in my marker line isn't an issue with me - I never use this line for actual fishing and the knoths were never noticeable on the cast unlike nylon knots which really slow the cast down.

I have already decided that if I need to cut any out I will simply tie another section in to bring it all back in line.

Having said that - does it really need to be spot on so long as there are marks which can be re-hit easily? Does it matter during a session if your 75 m mark is actually 71m?

Once you find something really special its a simple matter to tie the old pole elastic into place and measure it accurately in the ways we do at present for recording in the diary for later use.

Early days for me but I am mega impressed with the system.

Dynon do at least two different white braids - I can only comment on the '3000' which Les uses and I am just starting to use.

Best fishes

Great tip Shaun, simple but really effective. I'm sure it would be worth the time in preparation which by the sound of it won't take that long anyway.

For most of my fishing in the UK I'm not casting more than 90 yards as most fo the waters I'm currently fishing aren't big. If I've found a sexy looking feature with a marker float then I have always marked the line with pole elastic and clipped up then recast. But unlike on monofilament mainline, the pole elastic doesn't last long on braid which tends to cut into it and then you lose your mark and then you risk not being able to find your feature easily again.

I've been through quite a few marker braids over the years and have found some more prone to tangling and wind knots than others. I've used other Dynon braid in the past and have suffered from this problem. Having set up your system it would be a pain to have to cut off some braid due to a bad wind knot 30 yards down the line! So how have you found this white Dynon for casting?

BTW I've found underloading the spools (so the braid is 2-3mm below the lip rather than close to it) and wetting the braid (I dip the whole reel into the water) before casting helps prevent frap ups and wind knots.

Anyway, great tip, definitely worth considering.

Well worth the effort to do. The more I'm using the method the more I like it.

I was out last night well after dark so as to not disturb anyone else (everyone had left the lake) checking out a few swims I haven't fished before. The white line and black marks are so easy to see even by the fading light of my head torch.

Hopefully making that little bit extra effort....

Great tip Shaun. I've never been a big fan of pole elastic stop knots and tramping up and down the bank measuring line. I've also found that perfect spot that's never to be found again, but you can destroy the swim looking for it. I've had a quick look online and an added advantage is at around 16 or 17 quid a spool Dynon is a fair bit cheaper than most other braids.
