What if you want to have your mobile moon in your pocket, to watch the moon phases wherever you are? And plan ahead when to go fishing based on moon calendar?

Here is some videos about a moon phase app for most mobile platforms, all of them have FREE versions.

I have had very few fish over the years in heavy rain or even normal rain when I come to think about it. Between bouts of rain - no problem but few whilst it is lashing it down.

Hi Guys

Unfortunately I am not in a position to choose when I can go fishing with regard to moon phases, water temperature or any other atmospheric condition.

I go as often as I feel I can get away with it without my wife divorcing me, my boss sacking me and my son forgetting who I am.

I don't particularly feel confident whilst fishing a full moon at this time of year if it is clear and cold but at the end of the day atleast I am on the bank and in with a chance.

Fish seem to have a habit of surprise. I have sat there with fish rolling over my bait expecting a take at any minute, sitting on my hands so as not to be tempted into a recast. Then proceeded to blank. Then on other occasions I haven't so much as seen a fish, had any line indication, been just about to call it a day and then get an absolute screamer.

One thing though. I don't know about anyone else but I very rarely catch well during heavy rain. I don't know why but it just doesn't seem to happen very often for me. Infact thinking back I can only remember one occasion that I have absolutely had it off in stormy conditions and that was at a venue called Peznal in France some years back.

Cheers

Hi Tom,

The full Moon period can be an excellent time for catching carp and a time I rate.

Moon phases is a very complex subject when it comes to fishing and no matter how much you feel you understand there will always be exceptions to the rule.

I have a couple of friends Dave Booth and Archie Braddock who understand its effects so much more than I do and in Archie’s case he even seems to be able to predict at what time you are most likely to get a take depending upon the height of the moon.

I much prefer to simplify things and from many years of trying to understand the moon I have concluded the following.

From to-day (new moon) up to 2nd December (full moon) I rate for catching a few fish.

From the full moon waning back down to a new moon I rate far less.

Having said that....

A lot of my better fish have come during the waning moon cycle. I truly believe that the fish feed less on a waning moon BUT THE BIG FISH HAVE TO thus you put your chance of a big fish higher.

So, for maximum action and the chance of a good fish the first two weeks of a new moon and for less action but a better chance of a monster the two weeks following a full moon.

This simplifies what is an incredibly complex subject but this is how I have generally found things to be.

Fortunately other factors with weather conditions and atmospheric pressure can all kick in and really turn the fish on regardless.

Hope it helps

If you dont mind shaun i just have a question for you , Im keeping an eye on the weather and if it stays mild was going to go back to margot for the new year the only thing thats putting me off to a certain degree is the fact that the 31st of december is a full moon. I have heard of a few anglers that say they wouldnt even bother fishing on a full moon and i seem to remember a few of my blanks in france on a full moon also. I sometimes wonder if the blank was actually anything to do with the moon or wether it was just the fact that a big bright moon is just more memorable and sticks in your memory so to speak. I just wondered on your thoughts about full moon fishing . I'll be going anyway even with the moon and cold conditions as i do enjoy winter carping but your opinion on full moon etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and tight lines
                                                                                                                          Tom

A different slant on this thread. I stopped checking moon phases not only because I couldn't prove any direct link between my catches and the moon phase, but because it was doing nothing for my confidence. At the time I went fishing when I could go fishing and not always when I would have chosen. The last thing I wanted before I set off was a prediction telling me my chances of catching were grim!!

As Shaun says those grim conditions provided some of my best catches.

Very much my view on it. I quite like duff conditions for this fact and as anglers supposedly understand more less venture out at these times - thus less pressure.

Suits me sir!

Shaun wrote "Some of my biggest fish have come in what are generally considered hopeless conditions but I have yet to experience a big hit of fish in hopeless conditions."

This is something that i can also relate to in barbel fishing. I can recall numerous occassions where only one fish has been caught (sometimes between lots of anglers) and that fish has been a particularly large specimen.

I believe the reasons for this are two fold. Firstly big fish will feed in adverse conditions as to remain as big fish, they have to eat more (that's how they got big in the first place - by eating more than the other's).

Secondly when the smaller fish are not feeding the bigger fish can get to the bait easier and do not expend any energy (because they are not competing against their smaller cousins.)

          Cheers,
                     Pat

I've long held the theory with carp that totally simplifying the situation that the new moon to full moon stage is so much more productive in terms of action/chances than the waning full moon back to new moon.

Having said that I belive the larger fish keep feeding when a lot of the smaller fish have decided to lay up for a while. Some of my biggest fish have come in what are generally considered hopeless conditions but I have yet to experience a big hit of fish in hopeless conditions.

Hi Pat I agree some of my best winter catches on the Trent have coincided with rising water and that odd day in the middle of a cold spell when the temperature rises four or five degrees. Sees me racing for the river every time.

Full moons don't do it for me either

Cheers Ron
