NEW SEASON IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER !

The River Dove in its summer glory

It seems almost forgotten these days but the start of the traditional coarse fishing season is just around the corner (the glorious 16^th). For the first time since the old close season was abolished I have not wet a line since the 14^th March (apart from a week in France) and so will be very much looking forward to getting on the river and lakes when time allows.

Nice and overgrown

The stretches I fish will be mainly overgrown (due to no anglers ‘hacking’ out swims or pathways) and so will be lovely natural places to be whilst nature is in it’s full ‘summer glory’, the sort of places you would just enjoy sitting there, even if you weren’t angling.

This season I shall be fishing the Upper Trent, the River Dove, the River Severn, the Warwickshire Avon and hopefully later on in the year, a new river for me, the Derbyshire Derwent.

Here's hoping for a few like this.

Don’t know how the un-seasonal weather will affect the fishing at the start, but I suspect that it may be pretty much like last year with the barbel and chub being late in spawning again and so making location difficult as all the fish could well be grouped up in small areas.

So although I know this is mainly a carp fishing site I would just like to wish everybody who ventures out onto their local rivers, all the best for the coming season.

Unfortunately I’m going to miss the Glorious 16th on the river this year.
Due to a massive oversight I’ll be carp fishing on a lake, eating barbequed food and drinking red wine. Looks like my first shot at a barbel will be on a long weekend on the Wye with Mr Harrison in July. Then there’s plenty of time to get to grips with the mighty Trent again. Good luck on your adventures Pat, hopefully we’ll be reading about them on here very soon

Might be a few days before any of us can get on the midlands rivers (if the weather forecast is correct), there is a good chance they ‘might be in the fields’, DOH !

Hi Pat
one of the best early season starts I had on the Trent and the Wye was when the rivers had been in flood for weeks right through until July.

When we arrived on the Wye the river was raging through and chocolate brown. There were 14 booked on the stretch for the week and by Monday there were three of us. The river started fining down; still raging through but the fishing just got better every day. One of my most memorable weeks, I had 46 chub and a dozen barbel in one afternoon/evening session, just great fishing!

Hi Ron,
I think the crucial point you made there was “the river was fining down”. On rivers like the wye these are excellent conditions.
Unfortunately if the forecast is correct then the rivers I intended on fishing first (the dove and Trent), will be rising quickly which will make the fishing almost impossible. I know from bitter experience on these rivers that (with the weed coming down aswell), you will struggle to hold bottom with 8oz of lead under the rod tip. Conversley when they are running off the fishing is so much easier. They can be 6 foot up and falling and you will hold easily, but 2 foot up and rising quickly and the fishing is impossible.

I know what you mean Pat. On desperate days on the Trent; I’ve actually walked the river with my pound and a half barbel rod with an eight ounce bottle lead dangling on the end trying in vain to find a spot where I could hold bottom for a minute or two. A couple of sprigs of weed and its all over. When I’ve made the effort to get there I don’t like to give in:-)

I know what you mean Ron. Every short session means a 100 mile round trip for me , so I never give up. While you have a bait immune water you
Never know!
