Avoiding nuisance fish – any tips?

In April this year I’ll be off to Luke Moffatts’ La Graviers for the first time in search of monster carp.

As always anglers who have visited waters before are queuing up with advice. I have been told that a lot of the fishing is at range, placing baits from a boat. I’ve also been told that the bream are a problem.

Now if I’m placing baits at over 200 metres and hook a bream at 2am in the morning I’m not going to be too pleased!

Use 20mm+ baits and bigger hooks I’ve been told… a bit daunting to someone who thinks 15mm is a big bait and who’s normal hook is a size 8!

So… the age old question;

What are your strategies for avoiding bream. Are there any baits, flavours, ingredients, additives to avoid. Can you effectively avoid catching nuisance fish and target only carp?

have faith! Big baits are the way forward….
I’m sure you remember the late great Alan Smith? He used to use 22 mm baits with a size ten boilie hook without worries and very effectively. I’d have no problem with two 20mm quest baits to avoid the dreaded snotties.
If you fancy making your own baits, leaving the egg shell in the baits seems to deter the Bream also.

Hi Ron,
Would agree with Spencer’s advice and would have no problem in using double 20mm baits.
Also if the bream are a nuisance i would avoid the use of pellets for feed and would replace them with hemp seed. From experience at home bream do not seem to be very keen on hemp seed.

Hi Ron

I have fished a few lakes in France that have had large shoals of bream. One of the main attractions for bream is trout pellets and oily baits. As Pat has already suggested, prepare a bed of hemp along with the largest boilies that you feel confident with. 20 to 24mil will suffice as long as you feel confident in using them. I personally would try 20mil Rahja Spice that have been well hair dried to create a much harder boilie than usual. Fish them either as a single or double baits.
Another trick is to prepare a bed of hemp and boilies, fishing 1 rod on baited area and the other 2 well off it. If the bream do move in they should pre-occupy themselves on the free offerings, leaving the 2 outer baits alone. This does work, as I have caught lots of carp using this strategy, with most of my fish coming off the outer rods.

Avoid the deeper parts of the lake fishing the marginal water were the carp lurk and feed. Bream generally show themselves reguarly so avoid their patrol routes

Good advice above. I have always had more hassle from Bream with fish meal based baits than I have on bird food based.

I remember a couple of seasons on Bleasby in Nottingham. First year I fished with fish meals and got plagued by bream, second year I fished bird food based baits and got plagued by tench – but no bream (I did have a few carp on both which was a result on there).

Paul’s advice on fishing the marginal water is also good. On the whole bream tend to like to keep out in the lake on most of the waters I have fished – be that bank side disturbance or their preference I’m not sure but they don’t appear to get in the edge as much as the carp.

Hi Ron,
Forgot to add, never really had much trouble with bream whilst using particles. So could well be worth taking some Tiger nuts etc to use as a standby, I would be more than confident in using Tigers over hemp to attract the carp but also deter the bream.
