Had a lovely session at Grenville at the week end.
Work hadn’t allowed me to get there quite as early as I had wanted and I found myself with 2 feet firmly on the accelerator when I eventually got away.
I must admit to feeling a trifle disappointed when I saw 18 key tags hanging on the lake map in the syndicate hut – this mean’t 19th choice of swim for me.
I started to do the 1 1/2 mile lap of the lake with my unhooking mat slung over my shoulder to see what looked right. I only got a short way round the lake in a clockwise direction when I walked into ’34′. It simply looked right so this would do for my week-end base.
Darkness had set in before I was eventually able to sit back and relax in the chair.
I had spotted a fish roll way out of range but in order to try and get as close as possible (working on the fact that there are some large shoals of fish in Grenville and the one which showed could have been the furthest one away
from me) I set up one of my Free Spirit Hi ‘S’ives along with one of the ACE Tapered Leaders and tied a rig up to carry just two tiny Fruity Trifle ‘Pimple Pops’ (less air resistance) and hammered the lead out into the distant water.
It was only out there an hour before a chunky mirror found the bait. Just 2 tiny 6mm baits out on their own in 80 acres of what is mostly very deep water. It just goes to show the carp’s ability to find the bait for it was proper dark by the time I received the take.
The following day I busied myself trying to photograph some of the Grenville Dragonflies in flight. This was much harder than I had first imagined – they never stay still and I had to revert to manual focus as the auto focus simply wasn’t fast enough on the EOS. Never the less I was real pleased by my results. I really should purchase a ‘proper’ lens to go on my EOS as
I’m still using the cheap one which came with it.
Soon the bobbin was firmly stuck against the alarm again and I found myself playing one of the gorgeous Scaley Mirrors which Grenville will become very famous for in future years. At just over 20lb I was more than happy with my capture. This one had fallen to 2 x Rahja Spice Pimple Pops fished over a bed of 10mm Chilli Chocolates.
I found myself packing away thinking what a real enjoyable time I’d had. I felt suitably chilled to face
another hard week at work. So, 19th choice of swim still lead to a lovely weekend with just Brook the carp dog, the carp and the dragons for company. Oh yes there was also the kingfisher, the snake, the hares and a baby pike keeping me company in the edge for the duration.
There is definitely so much more to fishing than simply catching fish.
