Carp Fishing Techniques: Pop-ups…bottomstyle!
by Roy Van Goor
Since I am fishing for carp I never seem to use a lot of pop-ups. Its just not my
way of presenting a bait. …Well, Up to now!!.. Things started when I was discussing using pop-ups on a local meeting with another angler. He told me he was catching plenty on pop-ups on a local venue…where I had never used them
I fished that lake a lot and it got me thinking about it.I wanted to use the pop-ups in a different way, I remembered a article I had seen in some book..It was an article about presenting pop-ups on the bottom, making the presentation even better and more detectable for feeding fish.. I searched the sheds for the book and after I found it I had a look again at that article. It would be perfect for my style of fishing and maybe could boosted up my catch rates.. Its suits every possible rig, and very easy to make.. You don’t have to tie new rigs and can change from bottom to pop-up presentation in a second.
Attach a pop-up on to the hair and balance it with some lead shot for a 15mm pop-up I found that 0,3 gram makes it sit perfect, just “dancing around nicely on the bottom,”

When fish feed. they will feel the baits with there mouths before picking it up, by fishing it this way the bait is just a bit higher then the standard free offerings.
Another big advantage is that it will not take the smell from the bottom so it will be very attractive to carp, even on a muddy, smelly bottom It boosted my catches this year…in combination with the Quest bait pop-ups..Try it!!

Hi Roy,
This is something I do a lot of in my own fishing. I rarely use pop-ups popped up but do use pop-ups most of the time - if that makes sense. The furthest I ever pop baits up is the height of the hook with the counterbalance weight around a millimeter from the eye - but more often on the hair itself.
Another method I use quite a bit to ’sink’ the pop-up is to insert lead wire into it. Try using a split shot as the boilie stop. This gives a different scenario completely when a carp sucks it in. Worth trying on pressured waters in the same way as a snowman bait is with the pop-up and bottom bait fished in reverse.
Keep tricking them and the bobbins keep flying!
