I recently went to france for a week and started fishing bottom baits, I had a 34lb mirror the first day and nothing for 12 hours after that. I changed to a popup (snowman) and never stopped catching so popups work and a change of tatics can work wonders.. I use a simple method, bottom bait on the hair first then half a popup. I always use a bucket of water to check how the bait is sitting and add or decrease putty are required.. works for me...

Hi Roy,

This is something I do a lot of in my own fishing. I rarely use pop-ups popped up but do use pop-ups most of the time - if that makes sense. The furthest I ever pop baits up is the height of the hook with the counterbalance weight around a millimeter from the eye - but more often on the hair itself.

Another method I use quite a bit to 'sink' the pop-up is to insert lead wire into it. Try using a split shot as the boilie stop. This gives a different scenario completely when a carp sucks it in. Worth trying on pressured waters in the same way as a snowman bait is with the pop-up and bottom bait fished in reverse.

Keep tricking them and the bobbins keep flying!
