Great advise from the Roy and Jamie. I have a variation on the theme as I have fished waters where small fish have been a problem, but the carp want washed out baits. The washed out baits are too soft to stand the attention of the small fish. What I do is bait up with particles (or pellets or both) and boilies(washed out if you wish) when I start the session and I don't bait up again. I then fish single hookbaits of a different flavour. Some of the single hookbaits are fished on the baited area and some just off it. Rahja over special crab works well or visa versa. The carp on my waters appear to be tricked into thinking the bait of a different flavour is safe (I don't glug as this is too obvious to the carp). Using different sized baits with the above can also work. I recast with fresh hookbaits when necessary, always having nice hard baits out which deter the attentions of the silver fish. It works for me, but it is really important not to rebait as a bed of fresh bait will spook the fish. Without you have caught so many that there is nothing left out there. A further refinement would be to use unflavoured baits.

Hi Michael,
Over here in Holland there are some lakes where I have tried the this way and it works superbly.. Put some sugar in a bucket, then add water until the sugar is dissolved. Add you baits to the mixture, make sure that your baits are underwater and leave them in there for a day.
Use them after a day of soaking.. This way your baits will still be attractive. The baits are washed-out, and are filled up with sugar water. A big plus point is that the baits won’t absorb the smell of the bottom & feeding fish will detect this bait faster and it should result in more takes. When I used this method, the washed-out bait out fished the fresh one on most occasions.
