A couple of things I would add are that by making this slightly more tapered line lay you can actually get the effect of too much line coming from the spool too quickly when the spool is overloaded. This can cause line frap around the butt eye of your rod and also birds nest tangles. 
Also different lines will lay differently on the same reel and with the same washers, I am not certain why but they do. Certainly the line diameter will play a part but I also believe it is partly determined by the way it is would on to the spool by the manufacturer and then transfered to the reel.
