The Carp Don’t Know the Rules

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

I relearned and old last , you may think you have the sorted out but no one tells the the rules. When I joined Shaun on our Grenville he had already fished for 24 hours. He was a swim in a bay that he knows well and has fished successfully over the last year. I chose a swim at the other side of the on his . Conditions for us both looked good. Within an hour I was getting liners over the n’ and after three hours I had a run that I did not connect with. I sat confidently for another 24 hours; while the new that should have pushed the towards swung slowly around 360 degrees and the cooled considerably. Was I worried was I hell? The in this always off the of a cold . Don’t they? The picked up and I sat it out. (more…)

It’s been a long time since we had a with prolonged sub like we had earlier this year. Apparently the start of December 2008 was the coldest since 1970. The older I get the more I feel the cold, especially in my fingers and toes and unlike in the love song, it isn’t pleasant at all. In fact it’s miserable. in these conditions can be demanding and I know that if I don’t keep warm I won’t enjoy being ‘out there’ and more importantly, I won’t well. It is at this time of year when I start to dust off my gear and think about getting out on the rivers. After 6 months on the Stillwaters it is nice to be getting onto some moving , for some truly wild . Hopefully from now onwards (as the generally worsens) the banks will be less crowded and as always at this time of year the and chub will be in their peak of condition.
From now until the end of the season you can expect to encounter some of the most challenging conditions and the worse that the English can throw at you. With this in mind I have listed a few things, which although simple have helped me put more safely on the through many previous winters. (more…)

Memorable Session 3: Extreme Orient

I previously published this on the Lines blog, but it really does stand out for me as one of, if not the most memorable I have ever fished. Not because we caught big , indeed I have caught larger from other less challenging waters. It was just the immense elation of banking an 40lb Plus…
Here is the story:

It was with huge anticipation that I agreed to my friend Laurent’s invitation to try an assault on one of the most daunting of waters: the Lac d’.
is a veritable inland sea covering some 2600 hectares. Despite its , and typical of French waters, the sectors are very limited.
At the agreed time I rolled into the car park at the cafe in Geraudot and sat down with a cold beer to await Laurent. The conditions were ideal with a strong blowing and the forecast for some nasty for the next 48 hours. You see is not a difficult , its the rough conditions and its that increase its difficulty, the worse the the better ones chances of catching. Rotten conditions seem to bring the into the , thus increasing the chance of a take. (more…)

By Shaun Harrison

Another month passes by and, indeed, almost another year. So what has happened in the few short weeks since I last poured out my thoughts to the readers?

Quite a lot actually, but most astonishingly the editor’s exploitation of , my Staffordshire bull – who, incidentally is a , and not a , as Martin wrongly stated – in the November edition of . I don’t know, you would have thought after seeing her puppies that he might have cottoned on to the fact that she is actually female, wouldn’t you? (more…)
