I relearned and old lesson last weekend, you may think you have the lake sorted out but no one tells the carp the rules. When I joined Shaun on our syndicatewater Grenville Lake he had already fished for 24 hours. He was fishing a swim in a bay that he knows well and has fished successfully over the last year. I chose a swim at the other side of the point on his right.Conditions for us both looked good.Within an hour I was getting liners over the Surf n’Turf and after three hours I had a run that I did not connect with.I sat confidently for another 24 hours; while the new wind that should have pushed the fish towards swung slowly around 360 degrees and the temperature cooled considerably. Was I worried was I hell? The fish in this lake always fish off the back of a cold wind.Don’t they? The wind picked up and I sat it out. (more…)
I have just read your article on Grosley with much interest as I am taking my son and nephew in April, and I was a bit surprised to see the weather was so cold. We have booked pegs 17a 17b and 18, have you got any other advice for me and should I take my own bait or save some space and buy on site. One more thing is the tackle shop ok or should I stock up on rigs weights before I go. Sorry to ask such boring questions but these bit of info are not on the web site(more…)
It’s been a long time since we had a cold spell with prolonged sub zero temperatures like we had earlier this year. Apparently the start of December 2008 was the coldest since 1970. The older I get the more I feel the cold, especially in my fingers and toes and unlike in the love song, it isn’t pleasant at all. In fact it’s miserable. Fishing in these conditions can be demanding and I know that if I don’t keep warm I won’t enjoy being ‘out there’ and more importantly, I won’t fish well. So here are some tips about staying warm this winter.
It is at this time of year when I start to dust off my barbel gear and think about getting out on the rivers. After 6 months on the Stillwaters it is nice to be getting back onto some moving water, fishing for some truly wild fish. Hopefully from now onwards (as the weather generally worsens) the banks will be less crowded and as always at this time of year the barbel and chub will be in their peak of condition.
From now until the end of the season you can expect to encounter some of the most challenging river conditions and the worse that the English weather can throw at you. With this in mind I have listed a few things, which although simple have helped me put more fish safely on the bank through many previous winters. (more…)
I previously published this article on the Angling Lines blog, but it really does stand out for me as one of, if not the most memorable session I have ever fished. Not because we caught big fish, indeed I have caught larger from other less challenging waters. It was just the immense elation of banking an Orient 40lb Plus…
Here is the story: It was with huge anticipation that I agreed to my friend Laurent’s invitation to try an assault on one of the most daunting of waters: the Lac d’Orient. Orient is a veritable inland sea covering some 2600 hectares. Despite its size, and typical of French waters, the night sectors are very limited.
At the agreed time I rolled into the car park at the cafe in Geraudot and sat down with a cold beer to await Laurent. The conditions were ideal with a strong wind blowing and the forecast for some nasty weather for the next 48 hours. You see Orient is not a difficult lake, its the rough conditions and its size that increase its difficulty, the worse the weather the better ones chances of catching. Rotten conditions seem to bring the fishright into the bank, thus increasing the chance of a take. (more…)
Another month passes by and, indeed, almost another year. So what has happened in the few short weeks since I last poured out my thoughts to the Carpworld readers?
Quite a lot actually, but most astonishingly the editor’s exploitation of Brook, my Staffordshire bull terrier – who, incidentally is a bitch, and not a dog, as Martin wrongly stated – in the November edition of Carpworld. I don’t know, you would have thought after seeing her puppies that he might have cottoned on to the fact that she is actually female, wouldn’t you?(more…)
