hi jamie,

these things also happened to me..
I was fishing a local very big gravelpit..
When I arrived for a overnighter nothing was wrong.
the weather was perfect,,very calm..and sunny.
I unpacked the gear and started fishing.
Nothing happened so I got to bed at 23.00.
But not for long, after 1 hour or so the wind picked up and t started to rain.
It got worse by the second, and there was nothing I could do.
Just sitting on my bedchair and praying..
Holding on to my titan , and listing to the wind and heavy rainfall..
The wind had blown the rods of my pod and the hole swim was big mess..
After 2 hours it calmed down a little bit, and I packed up in the middle of the night to get home as quick as possible.
I could not fall a sleep at home thinking about that I probably lost some gear or forgot something.
I went back early morning and decided that I would fish for a few hours.
Arriving at my swim my hart almost fainted..
There was a big tree lying exactly where my bivvy was the night before..
Lighting struck it, and it had fallen in the lake and over my swim.
I casted out my rods..and started looking for missing gear..
a one-toner on my right-hand rod drew my attention..
a big fish was making its way to open water..
I could feel the fish going very slowly , sticking to the bottom.
After a while I regained control over the fish.
When it started to come closer to the bank it must have seen the tree that was in the lake and headed straight for it,
Went underneath it and snagged up.
I took my clothes off and went in,, the landingnet over my head I headed for the tree.
After climming on the tree I could see the fish breaking true the surface between the branches…a massive mirror..probably the biggest in the lake..
2 seconds later everything was over and the only thing I remember was a big splash..
What was my falling on back in the lake..
The line parted….

The fish I had lost was my target for that year, a mirror that normally goes over 25kg..
I never returned after that…

Hi Jamie,
Nice session write up. The worst trip i can remember fishing in this country was i think in 1987, you know the infamous Michael Fish 'what hurricane' quote.

I was fishing on the dam on the Church Pool (with the Lady Barbara's pool behind me). It was an unbelievably windy night where i actually had to use bungies to hold the rods down. Sleep was impossible has i spent the whole night holding onto my 45" nylon brolly which was covered with one of the original cheap (and not very good bivvies), being inbetween two pools made it even worse.

Anyway in the early hours of the morning i heard a massive cracking sound followed by a loud bang as one of the ancient big trees about 20 yards away from me was uprooted and crashed across the dam wall. That was bloody scary and i realise looking back now, how lucky i was not to have been seriously injured (or worse). I got lucky again at about 10 am when one of the lakes nice common's fell to my rods, it was only a fish of about 15lb but after a night like that i was more than grateful.

It is these sort of sessions that stick in the mind for a long time and that make sure you never take anything for granted in angling.

          Cheers,
                      Pat
