Question: Hello Shaun, I have a query about bait and the implications of it over the winter. I am using a maple based bait, like a sort of vegetable bait so to speak. Having been carp angling for years I know quite a lot and I’m experienced its just I would like to develop my knowledge of bait….anyway back to bait. It’s an often asked question but if you put in a lot of bait in the winter, do carp tend to shy off a big bed of bait? I have been successful scattering a kilo over each rod in the winter and I was told it was overkill. I would appreciate your advice mate.

Thanks

Jordan

Answer: Hi Jordan,

There are no hard and fast rules on this one. It very much depends on the type of bait, the weather conditions/water temperatures and the fish stock.
Personally I have always done better in the winter trickling the bait in rather than starting with a bed. I tend to cast around a fair bit more in the winter so don’t really want to commit to a particular area.
Once the water temperature is down to 39 degrees Fahrenheit carp being cold blooded get very slow in their metabolism so I would certainly hold back from more than a couple of pouch fulls of bait then.
Sorry for the rather vague reply, I hope it helps a little but all waters are so different.
Best fishes
Shaun
